Prepaid cards generally have the same uses as a credit card, so much so that they are commonly referred to as 'prepaid credit cards'. However, there is a difference. A prepaid card is completely powered by your cash and therefore the money you have in your prepaid account is the money you have to spend. This means there is no risk of running into debt. Consequently, rather than referring to it as a prepaid credit card, a better description would be a prepaid debit card, a prepaid Visa card or a prepaid MasterCard or plantium prepaid cards. For shopping online or PayPal verifications, lot of Indian debit cards are not accepted, banks don’t feel safe (especially here in India) while sharing our debit card number of the Internet.
PayPal and some US banks offer "disposable credit cards “or “prepaid virtual debit cards” where the credit card number expires after one-use. You key in the card details on a shopping website, finish the transaction and that credit card number is rendered useless immediately.
Now the Kotak Mahindra Bank in India is also offering these one time use debit cards that can be used on all websites that accepts VISA cards or MASTER cards. Here’s how Kotak bank Internet cards work - you login to your bank account and generate a new debit card number along with the 3 digit CVV code. You also specify a maximum limit of transaction allowed for that card.
You then open the shopping website, complete your purchase and make the payment via the card you just generated yourself. If you don’t use the card for 48 hours, it will automatically expire. It is free though you need an account at Kotak in order to use the virtual debit cards service.
This virtual debit cards will be useful for Indians as credit cards,to make online shopping and PayPal verifications.
